Dragon City Celebrates the 2022 Lunar New Year with a Merch Giveaway & AAPI Artist Spotlights

The Year of the Tiger. What does it mean?

The Chinese Zodiac dates back over 2000 years ago and was rooted in a system of zoolatry – animal worship. The Tiger came in third in line for the “Great Race” – a race where the Jade Emperor challenged all animals in the Kingdom. Tigers are considered extremely competitive people. They are courageous, ambitious, and generous with a drive to help others.

Dragon City wanted to celebrate this Lunar New Year with the same “drive to help others” and launched our first merchandise giveaway. For 1 week, 10 winners will be chosen from an online raffle and given exclusive Dragon City Merchandise gifts. The merchandise gifts included the Dragon City Poster, Dragon City “It’s a Dragon” Long Sleeve, and Lunar New Year Festival’s amazing tiger postcards.

Lunar New Year Festival (LNYF)

Lunar New Year Festival (LNYF) is a completely student-run production that seeks to inform the Washington University in St. Louis community about the traditional and contemporary aspects of Asian Pacific Islander cultures and to foster an atmosphere of cross-cultural awareness and appreciation.

This year, the philanthropy we have chosen to support is Haven of Grace, an organization that serves women who are pregnant and homeless by providing “a safe, nurturing home, educational programs and long-term support for mother and child.” Our fundraising efforts this year include our annual postcard sale to celebrate the incoming lunar new year! Thank you so much for your support and have a happy lunar new year!!

Paulina Hoong

Website:https://www.paulinahoong.com/

My art is rooted in my experience as a second-generation Chinese-American woman from rural Minnesota. Through watercolor art, Chinese ink brush painting, and digital art, I express my vision for a better world with bright and joyful colors.

I draw inspiration from Chinese symbolism, the diasporic Asian-American experience, being a restaurant kid, and the natural world. I love to smell flowers, taste food, and chase sunsets, which manifest into my art and writing. My goal is to make art accessible to people from all cultures and brighten up any space! As a writer, I am interested in exploring the complexities of food and culture. I write about Asian food for Minnesota Rice, my project focused on uplifting Asian cuisine in the age of anti-Asian racism. My artwork and writing have been featured by the Weisman Art Museum,  Asian American Organizing Project, and The Heavy Table.

Saiyre Illustration & Design

Saiyre Illustration & Design is a small art business that revolves around concepts of fantasy, mythology, and surrealism.  Their work explores the intricacies of mythology and concepts through detailed imagery and vibrant colors. Through enamel pins, prints, notebooks, bookmarks, and more, Saiyre brings these tales to life with a personal twist.

Behind Saiyre is a Chinese American artist and entrepreneur who hopes to bring part of her culture to the world this week. To celebrate, three pins have been painstakingly designed to feature the Chinese Phoenix, the Chinese dragon, and the guardian lions. While these mockups are more detailed than the final product, they reflect the beautiful details of Chinese elegance and design. If interested, feel free to visit www.saiyre.com/store for preorders!

Jasmine Nguyen Gutierrez

Jasmine Nguyen Gutierrez is an Asian-American designer and illustrator based in Austin, TX who likes to create cute and thoughtful art. As a quiet kid, she was too shy to use her voice so instead, she used her imagination and found creative ways to speak up. You can connect with Jasmine on IG @jazgtzdesign

Jas Tsan

I’m Jas and I’m an Australian Chinese illustrator that focuses on celebrating and connecting with my Asian identity as well as my personal sense of identity and mental health. Food plays a massive part in my illustrations as in a lot of Asian households, food was our love language. Peeling fruit was how our dads told us they loved us. Grandma making us eat everything on our plate and sending us home with a doggy bag was her way of looking after us.

Food is so integral to all our celebrations including the mid-autumn festival, LNY, and weddings. My artwork is usually bright and bold, reflecting how bright and find my memories are, with an edgy and fun twist.

For the lunar new year, I created a sticker sheet that features a cute little tiger that would be great for journaling or giving to kids with their red envelopes! I also have lots of other products in my store including holographic stickers, tote bags, pins, and prints.

Educational Bilingual Books (@bitty.bao) • Instagram photos and videos

When Lulu Cheng & Lacey Benard launched Bitty Bao a year ago, it began as a pet project – something to break up mom’s life and add an element of creativity back into our existence. We sought to draw upon our teaching backgrounds and create Chinese bilingual board books for children that not only taught beginning vocabulary in an engaging way but also embedded Chinese culture seamlessly into the pages. They wanted to create books that they had been craving for their own children to have but were noticeably rare to find in the mainstream channels.

In September 2020, Bitty Bao launched with three board book titles; Counting with Dim Sum, The Colors of Snow Ice, and Everyday Heroes. As the pallets of books arrived, we giggled with equal parts delight and fright at the task at hand – finding “our market”, families who craved these books as much as we did.
